Modernizing Naval Ships

We have already discussed the importance of maintaining naval ships. This is critical because Canada keeps its navy ships in service for many years. But not only is maintenance critical, so is modernization. If ships are to be in service for 30 or 40 years, they need to be updated as technology changes. While maintenance involves fixing the assets that already exist, modernization means bringing something new that was not in the original design. Modernization usually requires larger, longer and more expensive effort than maintenance.

What’s involved in modernizing Royal Canadian Navy ships? Glad you asked. The Naval Association of Canada Briefing Note #32 gives you a short introduction to the topic. It’s available at BN32-Modernization.pdf (navalassoc.ca)
