A previous post to Broadsides covers the re-emergence of a potent Russian submarine fleet. Coupled with Mr.Putin's apparent interest in using his Navy to support foreign policy (also covered on Broadsides) we would be wise to watch the growth of Russian naval capabilities. Another aspect of his using the Russian military to watch is whether he draws on the lessons of recent history in employing those forces. Regrettably, those lessons seem to be forgotten in many other states.
