China in Canadian Arctic Waters

By David Dunlop, 28 August 2023

A short article by Rob Huebert was published on the 25th of August in The Globe & Mail that forum members may be interested in. The title is “China is on a relentless mission to control Canada’s Arctic waters.” In this article, Dr. Huebert (CNR Editorial Board member, senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and associate professor of political science at the University of Calgary) explains how Canada’s reluctance or inability to respond to China’s actions threatens Canadian sovereignty. Huebert mentions the Chinese balloons that flew over North America, and the Chinese monitoring buoys that were found in Canadian Arctic waters, but what he stresses is China’s development of underwater listening systems that are capable of being used in the Arctic (plus China’s construction of icebreakers). With these systems in place, China would know more about what’s happening in the Canadian Arctic than Canada would. The article is an interesting read for all forum members.
