Op Caribbe 2019_1

Security and Good Order on the Seas

Although navies are primarily designed to fight wars, they perform a variety of other duties as well. Some naval operations focus on security and good order on the seas, and include such things as countering piracy. Another security-related duty in which the Royal Canadian Navy has participated for many years is Operation Caribbe, a counter-drug operation in coordination with the US Navy and US Coast Guard in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific. Over the years, RCN destroyers, frigates and Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels have all participated. While the ships that were participating in early 2020 returned home early due to Covid-19, in October 2020 Canada was back in the Op Caribbe counter-narcotic hunt.

If you want to learn more about the RCN and counter-narcotic operations, take a look at the Naval Association of Canada Briefing Note found at https://www.navalassoc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bn29-counternarcotics-final.pdf
