In accordance with CBC News, dozens of workers at the Irving Halifax Shipyard refused work this week after a contractor from Quebec came in last week and did not self-isolate.
Linda MacNeil, Atlantic regional director for UNIFOR, the union representing workers at Irving, blames Irving: "The issue that we see as a union is there was a total lack of communication with the workers, with our members. If they had been more forthcoming and showing that there had been safety protocols being in place, there may have been a different outcome here," she said.
JD Irving spokesperson Mary Keith said the company will respond after it reads and reviews the Labour Department report, expected Wednesday.

There seems to be a double standard here by the province. The union is correct. There is a total lack of communication with the workers. Being more forthcoming with health and safety protocols would have resulted in a different outcome. No Labour Dept investigation and no need to blame Irving from MacNeil! The double standard comes when Dr. Strang revoked an exemption given to executives with Irving Shipbuilding travelling to and from the United States in July. Stop the petty finger pointing, get it right the first time and let’s get the job done! Our navy’s future is too important for this silliness!
