Time to think about submarines?

28 September 2018. There have been many discussions about the missing element in the National Shipbuilding Strategy – i.e., submarines. In the not so distant future, Canada will have to start thinking about submarines. The Victoria-class subs are all up and running – after a slow start due to extended maintenance and repair – and are apparently doing a great job. But now it’s time to think about the next batch of submarines. Will Canada stay in the submarine business? If so, then what type? The procurement process will undoubtedly be long and painful. Best to get started thinking about it now so there’s no gap in the capability. For a discussion about the utility of diesel submarines, see James Holmes, "Diesel Submarines: The Game Changer the U.S. Navy Needs," National Interest, 23 September 2018. https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/diesel-submarines-game-changer-us-navy-needs-31827
