USN sailors

Training and Personnel

After the publication of the Comprehensive Review of Recent Surface Force Incidents, the US Navy is beginning to implement changes. The report noted that USN sailors were deficient in the fundamentals – rules of the road, COLREGS and “planning, preparing, and executing in the heat of the moment.” Surface Warfare Officer training courses will be lengthened in some cases, and the navy will start to rely on simulator training more heavily. As well, they are talking about regular standardized testing on seamanship and navigation. Priorities are individual skills training, updating navigational equipment, re-certifying sailors when there are upgrades to equipment, and reconsideration of manning and personnel hours on deployed ships.
