Maritime Security Conference 2007

The annual Maritime Security Conference will take place at Dalhousie University June 14 to 16, 2007. The theme of this year's conference is "The Maritime Role in National Response to Emergencies." This year, the conference is presented cooperatively by the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies at Dalhousie University and the International Centre for Emergency Management Studies at Cape Breton University.

The conference will be a case-based study of four main events, two that deal with natural disasters and two that deal with human conflict: Hurricane Katrina; the Indian Ocean Tsunami; the Evacuation from Lebanon; and the recent Integrated Tactical Effects Experiment. The cases will be examined to determine what lessons have been learned from recent events, what concepts of operation are being developed for future events, and what maritime capabilities are critical to ensuring the success for these operations.

The Centre for Foreign Policy Studies has arranged three keynote speakers (one each day) and among them will be Vice-Admiral Drew Robertson, Chief of the Maritime Staff, and Dr. Joe DiRenzo, Director of Plans, U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Division. Other principal speakers will include Rear-Admiral Dean McFadden, Commander Joint Task Force Atlantic, Commodore Paul Maddison, Commander of the Standing Contingency Force, Captain Karen Armstrong, Director, Coast Guard Operations Atlantic Region, Commander V. Srivatsan, Indian National Maritime Foundation, Dr. Norman Friedman, and Dr. Stanley Weeks.

The conference is attracting attendance from across Canada, as well as from Chile, India, Pakistan, The United Kingdom, and The United States. Among the observers will be Senator Colin Kenny, Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Security and Defence.

The venue is the Scotiabank Auditorium, The Marian McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building, 6135 University Ave., Dalhousie University. All observers at the conference will be required to pay a fee of $150 (Cdn), payable at the time of registration. Students will be required to pay a fee of $35 (Cdn), providing their institution's name and student identification number with their registration form.
